Consistency is the name of the game at John B’s Nu Electro HQ. Only releasing tracks that fit their label’s distinctively crisp, galaxy-chomping synth-soaked melodic remit, the label’s less-is-more approach to releases has won Nu Electro a spotless reputation in the widest of electronic circles.
This come-back release is the perfect example. Last spotted on Nu Electro in 2010, Hungarian artist Cube has painted three firing pictures of D&B life in the digital fast lane. Paying homage to the tradition of purist electronic music – dating right back to Kraftwerk – there’s a clarity and rich funk embedded throughout.
‘Shine On You’ takes pole position, igniting with a palpitating synth bass hook that thunders between two notes. Heartbeat riddim a-go-go, we’re soon garnered breathless as Cube soaks us in a heaven-sent orchestra of dreamy synths. Before long both the bass and rich tapestry of synths combine, whisking us off to another world with an almost psychedelic sense of mischief.
Next up, ‘Sleepless’. With a dynamic that develops with new elements on every bar, it’s a much more gradual builder than its predecessor. Before long the midrange bass hook starts riffing with more and more urgency thanks to a cannon of melodic twists which echo each other with crisp decadence. Pro-tip: wait for the main drop and feel the turbo boosters truly ignite. ‘174 BPM Love’ provides the hard climax every Nu Electro release deserves; kicking off with a thumping rhythm combo there’s a strong sense of drama… Until the synths kick in and we’re thrown back several feet in ecstasy. Coated in emotion, driven by the right balance of production weight and ripped with raw euphoria, it’s the ultimate end-of-night hug anthem. Feel the love!
Three startling examples of timeless melodic electro-influenced D&B, three reminders of Nu Electro’s consistency and clout… Essential listening for all DJs.
