With high profile appearances on both Beta Recordings and its sister-label Nu Electro since 2010, Gmorozov’s pedigree is firmly established. A PHD scientist based in the deepest, darkest depths of Russia (Kazan to be precise) when he’s not publishing academic articles on physical chemistry, he’s conjuring creations that dig spiky claws into the rich history of electronic music with one hand… And caress your ears with the other.
Operating at the fertile forefront of myriad genres, whether he’s slapping down crisp synth-driven D&B, remixing rock legend Billy Idol or hurling down Boy George-approved techno on super-respected imprints such as Bad Life, his sonic motifs are dark, dynamic and ultimately physical. This EP is the perfect example of his high level abilities.
Within split seconds of igniting, ‘Hell Sequence’ is so nagging it’s in danger of infecting your brain for eternity. With its detuned arpeggio, there’s a strong air of paranoia throughout as we rise and rise towards a dense techno-influenced drop. Sweaty, but ultimately funky, ‘Hell Sequence’ is sprung with a relentless loopy energy that twists and morphs and worms deep into your psyche.
'Sequence XV III’ builds on these ingredients with a different twist. Here the main bedrock riff is a higher note, allowing a rich flow of darker bass textures bubble and surge beneath. Deep-coded with an array of percussive elements that become part of the loopy melody, it’s an instant cause for complete dancefloor hypnosis; locking your floor tightly from its blast off to its stark, naked-synth breakdown.
Take away the tempo and they defy simple genre classification. Imagine Sub Focus covering a Juan Atkins track. Or Noisia remixing Black Strobe…. Gmorozov has created some seriously timeless electronic music right here. The perfect fit: this won’t be the last time Gmorozov’s high profile pedigree is represented on Beta Recordings.
